CHIMNEY LINERS

Liners

Lining the flue in your chimney helps maintain a safer burning environment by containing the combustible residue and protecting the walls from heat. Liners also help create a more optimum burning environment for updated or modern fireplaces. Since the early 1900’s, installing a liner has been recommended and even mandated in some areas. There are several types of liners one can choose from based on your needs.

Clay Tiles

Inexpensive and readily available, clay tiles are the most common type of masonry chimney liner. They preform well so long as the fireplace is open and properly maintained. However, since they cannot rapidly absorb and distribute heat during a chimney fire, they are prone to crashing and spitting due to thermal shock. Modern gas appliances are also poor choices for use with clay tile liners.

Stainless Steel

Metal chimney liners are typically used to repair most existing chimneys. Durable and safe if properly maintained, these liners help protect the flue from the high temperatures and buildup, as well as providing a better fit for more modern high-output gas units. Insulation may be used in addition to the metal liner in order to get a better fit in the existing structure.
